The last time we spoke about Cuts & Comics we gave them the GOLDEN STAR OF THE UNIVERSE: A+ Rating.

“This isn’t a barbershop run by a slug monster. It is captained by a professional, intelligent, funny, and respectful woman named Ragan and her husband, Sean Mack. She is one-half of the creative geniuses behind the only barbershop comic book store in the United States. She holds her company at a very high level. In our short time together, she told me of two (now ex) employees who were released because they were bringing in the smell of marijuana and tobacco after taking breaks. Visit any Dollar General, and that smell is mandatory for all employees. But Cuts & Comics holds themselves to a higher quality than Dollar General (then again, so does an old Burger King bag of sick rodents).”

I won’t oogle over her too much (she’s married), but for something as intimate as a haircut, you want someone who genuinely seems happy to A) work there B) meet you and C) touch your head. If you can check out all three without a sliver of doubt, you will become a regular somewhere. Well, welcome to your new regular. Ragan has been confident in her abilities since she was a kid–as soon as she was trusted with scissors, she started cutting her own hair and feeding into this passion. Why have a different barber when you’re already the best? Ragan gets it. It’s the same reason I don’t talk to other men with mustaches–we live above mediocrity.

If you’re used to places like Great Clips, Bargain Barber, Cent Snips, and Free Haircut from Mom, the price tag of $25 for a cut may take you back a second. I won’t allow that talk. This place sits a perfect five stars on Google by every customer because there are people who understand to skip Fast Food once a week and pay for a great haircut. I am not an experienced haircut customer. I do not know the “norm” or what’s “worth it” or how to “look attractive” at all. I exist, get long hair, make it go away, continue being me, and hope no one bullies me! I have never had long hair. I’m from a group of 4 brothers, and 3 of them looked like beardless Jesus multiple times since birth. I can not grow a beard or have long hair (though only one is the fault of pathetic puberty genes).

And since my first time stepping into the above-the-rest Cuts & Comics, I have become not just a customer, but a friend to my wonderful barber. In fact, she is the first customer I had on the Newnan Time with Harold merch store! Imagine my surprise when she came to see me host trivia, wearing a beautiful shirt with my name on it. Um. Swoon much? Yes, I do.

The one negative that came from my time with C&C is that I couldn’t remember everything we talked about and my recording of the conversation didn’t do a very good job recording (it didn’t at all–lol). Thankfully, Ragan cut out some time (heh heh get it?) to tell me more about their incredible business and story. We had a great conversation through Facebook messenger that I am sharing here. Enjoy!

Harold: Hello, Cuts & Comics! First and most importantly, how the heck are you and what have you been doing all week?

Ragan: Hey there! We’ve been quite busy, outside of cutting hair and adding new comics to our inventory. This week we have actually been focusing on marketing, our loyalty program, and school partnerships. Whew! Working hard to answer your question!

Harold: You know you’re my favorite place for hair cuts, but why the comics? How did you decide to combine the two?

Ragan: It was an idea that Sean had honestly. When he was a kid, his father took him to the barbershop and they had a bunch of comics on the table in the waiting area. The comic book, Batman vs. Predator, caught his eye. He knew who both the characters were from watching movies with his father so he read the book and was hooked on comics from there. When he was older, he worked at Comic City in the metro Detroit area before becoming an independent comic book publisher himself. He always wanted to open his own comic book store, but he knew that comic book stores made very slim profit margins so he would need something else to bring consistent business into the store. He remembered that he was introduced to comics through the barbershop and thought the two could be a good combination. Then he just so happened to marry a barber. LOL.

Harold: Incredible. No one else has thought of this it seems. And what brought you to wanting to cut hair for a living?

Ragan: I’ve always been good at doing hair for my family and friends and one day I made a rational decision after attending a College recruitment event to take up Cosmetology. However, I’ve always been fixated on cutting hair and not really styling, coloring, etc like other folks that take up Cosmetology. My number one focus was Barbering the entire time, but it was too late to change courses. I made this my choice of living because I am infatuated with the MASTERPIECES of hair cutting (I like to call them) and making people feel and look GREAT.

Harold: Who is the most fascinating person you’ve given a haircut to?

Ragan: Ok, now! You asked the question… so don’t cry. Its YOU (all jokes aside). You are the most fascinating because you are the most resilient (You don’t melt like white chocolate, lol). Your story fascinates me, your honesty, your struggles, your strengths, your giving, your courage, your kindness, your commitment, your compassion, and your HUMOR. IT ALL FASCINATES ME!! Thank you for being such an awesome person. The world needs you and not more roundabouts.

Harold: Well that’s not the answer I was trying to tee up but I’ll take that answer! I’m sure it can get boring cutting hair all the time, so I’m glad I can make it more interesting.

Ragan: You didn’t say interesting. My most interesting clients are definitely the Chair Pastors. I always look forward to those visits. Guess why?! lol! No! Don’t!

Harold: I’m sure you have crazy stories! How long have you been in Newnan? The business is still relatively new.

Ragan: My husband and I have lived here going on 3 years. Cuts and Comics is only 8 months old.

Harold: What makes Newnan home to you? What do you love about it? What would you improve about it?

Ragan: Newnan is home because this is where the Macks relocated to for a fresh start together after falling in love LOVE. What we love about Newnan is the amount of support that the community has shown us in regards to their love for such a unique business. The one thing I would like to see improved in Newnan is the lack of inside activities. We need some miniature golf, Dave n Busters, or something close. The Macks are very competitive WITH EACH OTHER when it comes to shooting hoops. Sadly, Sean always win.

Harold: Send me some information about your revamped loyalty program!

Ragan: Ok so this is what out Loyalty program looks like. Every purchase in store $15 and up you will receive ONE cape. And those capes can be used or sat to accumulate with no expiration. We have more options for purchase. I just couldn’t list them ALL.

Harold: In your 8 months of business here, how has it gone? Are things growing at a good pace?

Ragan: Business is going GREAT! We couldn’t be more grateful. Every referral, every mention of Cuts and Comics, and every Google review has helped us grow and continues to work for us.

Harold: Thank you so much. Last question: What is the number 1 reason someone should choose you?

Ragan: The number one reason that people should choose Cuts And Comics is because we are a small, family owned business that is the first of its kind and beyond cool. We’ve uniquely combined the aspects that we love of a comic book shop with the aspects that we love of a barbershop; great conversations. Whether its a chat with your barber (Ragan), while you are relaxed and being serviced–you can simply unload to an open and friendly ear in a therapeutic manner. Also, you can chat with a fellow comic book lover (Sean) about your favorite pop culture IPs. You’ll always be greeted with a welcoming smile and engaging conversation while getting shaped up or caught up on your favorite comic book stories.

If your business wants to chat with us, message us on Facebook anytime or email at NewnanTimeWithHarold@gmail.com
