NEWNAN COMMUNITY Takes Strong Stances on City Attorney Job They Can’t Describe
Following the City Council’s rejection of Mayor James Shepherd’s city attorney nominee, Newnan’s online comment sections have erupted with certainty, outrage, and confidence, largely from residents who openly admit they have no idea what a city attorney actually does.
Locals across Facebook and front row church pews have declared the decision either “a threat to democracy” or “long overdue,” often in the same conversation, and usually without referencing any legal duties beyond vague claims that the city attorney should “protect the paper” or “keep council from graffitiing bathrooms” or “I dunno. Attorney stuff.” When asked to elaborate, many pivoted to concerns about loyalty, tradition, or “just having a baaaaaad feeling about this.”
The city attorney’s actual role has received far less attention but speculation, assumptions, and confident declarations based entirely on vibes continue to roll out as City Hall collectively sighs.
As the debate continues, one thing remains clear: Newnan residents have very strong opinions about the city attorney, a position they remain deeply committed to not understanding.
