City approves cemetery upgrades, adds physical Pokémon monuments for 30th anniversary

As part of the city’s recently approved $1.2 million master plan for cemetery improvements, officials have confirmed an unexpected addition: a series of permanent stone Pokémon monuments to mark the franchise’s 30th anniversary in 2026.

City leaders clarified this week that the installations will be real granite and marble structures placed throughout the grounds — not just augmented reality features.

Planned pieces include a polished black granite Gengar in the historic section, a winged Dragonite overlooking the central lawn and a lantern-style Chandelure along a shaded walkway. A smaller Snorlax is expected near the entrance “to encourage visitors to slow down,” according to planning notes.

The mausoleum plaza will reportedly feature a carved relief of Mewtwo described as “thoughtful and reflective.” Additional concepts include Lucario near the veterans’ area and Bulbasaur incorporated into new landscaping beds.

Each monument will include a plaque listing the Pokémon’s type ( Ghost, Dragon, Grass or Psychic ) along with a short explanation tying it to themes of remembrance and legacy.

Officials stressed that no graves will be disturbed and that placements have been carefully mapped. Installation is expected to begin next year, with unveiling events planned throughout 2026.

“Our goal is to honor history,” a spokesperson said. “And, apparently, to do it with a 12-foot Tyranitar.”
