Summer Grove Pickleball League Name Causes Ongoing Confusion, Mild Tension
SUMMER GROVE — What started as a small neighborhood pickleball league in Summer Grove has turned into a continuing point of discussion after the group began using the name “Summer Grove Swingers Club.” Organizers say the name was meant to reference the paddle’s swinging motion, a basic part of the game, but some residents and nearby teams say the wording has caused more confusion than expected.
Players from Peachtree City have voiced complaints, saying the name feels unnecessary and vaguely familiar. Several players said their teams are far more passionate about the name and that the Summer Grove name choice only proves Summer Grove’s lack of identity. “It’s not that we own the name officially,” said one Peachtree City player, “but it kind of feels like it was already taken, socially at least.”
Summer Grove league organizers maintain that there was no deeper meaning and that the name was chosen quickly during an early planning meeting. One organizer said the group “is just passionate about swinging” and didn’t expect anyone outside the neighborhood to care very much. Since then, some new players have joined, thinking it was one thing, and left when they realized it was just pickleball, which organizers admit has been awkward.
No formal action has been taken to change the league name, and no one is sure who would even make that decision. For now, games are continuing as normal, with organizers hoping the attention dies down on its own. Still, some Peachtree City teams say the situation could have been avoided entirely, and are challenging Summer Grove to a “swingers off.”
