Newnan Loves Their Waffle Houses ……. and ghost stories
I have spent a lot of time in Newnan. Some would say too much time. Others would say not enough. Others won’t talk to me at all—they just whisper “Chub Gorge” when they think I’m out of earshot. I don’t know who started that nickname, but I have my suspicions, and they’re all cowards.
Over the years I’ve wandered just about every corner of this town. I’ve eaten enough downtown lunches to qualify as a pigeon. I’ve sat through traffic that somehow lasted longer than 3:10 to Yuma. I’ve driven around the square so many times my GPS occasionally says, “you ain’t even trying to park, Chub Gorge.”
And through all of that research (yes, I’m calling it research), one place has always stood out.
Waffle House.
At two in the afternoon, it’s a restaurant. At three in the morning it’s less of a restaurant and more of an active sociology experiment. CEOs, construction workers, college students, exhausted nurses, guys wearing pajamas with cowboy boots, someone carrying a fishing pole for reasons no one dares ask about, they all end up there. It’s the closest thing America has to neutral territory.
But every Waffle House has that one booth nobody seems to choose.
Every Waffle House has that one employee who’s somehow worked every shift since 1987 and has seen things.
Every Waffle House has at least one regular who appears to have no home, no car, no visible source of income… yet is somehow always already there when the doors open.
So after years of careful observation, countless cups of coffee, and absolutely no scientific qualifications whatsoever, I have reached a conclusion.
Your local Waffle House may be haunted. Here are the signs.
- The jukebox only plays “Ghost Riders in the Sky.”
- The hash browns arrive smothered, covered, and… possessed.
- The cook yells, “Order up!” and things start floating up
- Coffee cups refill themselves.
- Every syrup bottle points toward table 7.
- The “Open 24 Hours” sign briefly changes to “Open for Eternity.”
- The grill keeps making bacon noises when nobody is cooking bacon.
- Old customers leave exact change.
- The waitress says, “Your usual?” when staring at the ceiling.
- The bathroom mirror fogs up with the words, “Need butter.”
- The health inspector refuses to come in after sunset.
- The cook flips pancakes without touching them.
- Every receipt includes a mysterious customer named “Edgar.”
- The ceiling fan spins backward whenever someone orders chili.
- There’s smoke in the old smoking section.
- A waitress whispers, “He’s back,” every thunderstorm.
- The employee sign changes to “Abandon Hope.”
- Every clock freezes at 3:17 a.m.
- Every hash brown order comes with one extra onion ring that nobody cooked.
- A customer says, “I’ll have what he’s having,” pointing to an empty booth.
- Every waffle comes out looking suspiciously like that actor from Ghost. John Travolta?
- Every receipt says, “Tell your family we said hello.”
- The waitress says, “Welcome back,” to complete strangers… and she’s always right.
- The cook accidentally cracks an egg, and a tiny scream escapes.
- The jukebox charges 25 cents… then gives you a refund because “it wasn’t your turn.”
- Every employee swears the waffle iron blinked.
- The syrup is somehow… carbonated.
- Every fly inside suddenly disappears when the preacher comes in.
- A biscuit appears every morning on the roof.
- Every time someone orders raisin toast, a plate crashes somewhere.
- Every employee has seen the waffle iron open by itself… and politely pretends it didn’t.
- Someone keeps tipping exactly $6.66.
- The raccoon refuses to go inside anymore.
- Every family photo on the wall has one extra person.
- A voice keeps correcting everyone’s pronunciation of “pecan.”
- A voice gets offended if you ask for ketchup on eggs.
- The waitress says, “Don’t look behind you,” and immediately walks away.
- Every employee insists there’s only one bathroom. There are clearly two.
- A menu keeps appearing with an item called “The Last Breakfast.”
- Every baby in the restaurant waves at the same empty corner.
- A pale man keeps trying to pay with Confederate money and Blockbuster gift cards.
- The manager shrugs and says, “Look, as long as they wait to haunt people until after breakfast rush, corporate doesn’t really care.”
